This section will highlight how terrorists and the groups they belong to operate and how they try to achieve their goals.

In addition to wanting the greatest impact, terrorists must consider their skill, abilities, resources, and what they want to accomplish. They have to keep their operations simple, they want success, and in most cases, they want to escape. The question of 9/11 and other suicide attacks will always be a topic of discussion, however most terrorists, both foreign and domestic are attack oriented and plan for their escape after executing their mission.

Let us look at the types of operations we could see here in the US.

HOW IS IT THEY GO ABOUT INSTILLING FEAR AND TRYING TO FORCE THEIR CHANGES ON OTHERS?

Terrorism might target:

  • National policy
  • A local community
  • Business
  • Ethnicity
  • Members of a specific group

The goals of terrorism are usually political, social, or religious in nature. In their own way, terrorist believe that they are working toward a better world. They may want:

  • To influence policy decisions
  • To gain their own homeland or some type of independence
  • Special privileges
  • Exemption from rules
  • To overthrow any existing government believing it to be non-representative, authoritarian, corrupt, or immoral
