Directors Update:
In April, the School partnered with the College of Education and the
Michigan Safe Schools Initiative for a very successful conference on
school
safety. Nearly 300 individuals, representing school safety teams
from every county in Michigan, attended the conference. One of
the
highlights of the conference was a live video presentation by Gregory
Thomas,
the Director of Security for the New York City Schools. Mr.
Thomas
provided a chilling yet very informative discussion of the lessons
learned
from September 11, 2001.
The School was successful in getting approval for a new specialization in Judicial Administration. This is the culmination of years of discussion with leaders in the field of court administration. The School is the home of the Judicial Education Reference Information and Technology Transfer Project (JERITT) that serves as the central clearinghouse of information on judicial education. John Hudzik, School of Criminal Justice Professor and Dean of International Studies, as well as Terry Curry, Director of the School of Labor and Industrial Relations, have been two of the pioneers of scholarship in the area of judicial administration. Between their research, the JERITT program, and the reputation of the School, a number of the leading professional associations in judicial administration have come to MSU in the spirit of collaborating on this new initiative. Dr. Maureen Conner, Director of the JERITT program, and Professor Reggie Sheehan from Political Science, are leading the initiative. Other key partners are Dean Marietta Baba and the College of Social Science, the Detroit College of Law, the Public Administration Program within the Department of Political Science, the School of Labor and Industrial Relations, and International Studies and Programs. The Judicial Administration Specialization will piggyback on the School's Internet based master's program and thus be available to court personnel located throughout the United States and the world.
The first of many end-of-year ceremonies honoring School of Criminal Justice students was the Spring Awards Ceremony of the MSU United States Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Cadets Matthew Owczarek, Morgan Plummer, Andrew Shanley, and Shawn Westenberg, all CJ majors, received a variety of honors for academic and service achievements.
Our new partners, Emergency Response Solutions (ERS), launched the Firefighter Survival Academy. This is an on-line resource tool for firefighters and first responders. This is part of the MSU Global Community Security Institute. The Firefighter Survival Academy is available at: www.ffsurvival.com

Directors Update:
The School of Criminal Justice remains a hotbed of
activity.
In December, Professor David Carter, alumnus David Westrate, and I
visited
the DEA Training Academy at Quantico to continue our discussions about
a partnership to develop an academic and professional development
program
in intelligence. These discussions continue and we believe
will lead to a very timely and innovative program.
Professor Judith Collins offered her workshop, "Information Security: Tracking Criminals on the Internet" to another group of about 35 law enforcement officials here at MSU. She then was invited to offer the workshop for FBI agents at Quantico. Both workshops received rave reviews from participants.
The School of Criminal Justice was the lead university at the first Project Safe Neighborhoods Conference in Philadelphia in January. Approximately 1,500 local, state, and federal criminal justice officials from the 94 federal judicial districts attended the conference. Attorney General Ashcroft provided a talk on reducing firearms violence and President Bush made a videotape presentation to the conference participants. School of Criminal Justice faculty and outreach staffs were very prominent leading nine workshops.
On February 11, Career Adviser Tim Homberg once again orchestrated a
very successful Career Fair for our students. Nearly 70
agencies
participated in the fair and approximately one-half of the agency
representatives
were School alum. Indeed, we guess that 80 - 100 of the
agency
representatives were alum. Students had the chance to talk with agency
representatives about careers, the application process, and
internships.
A number of students participated in "live" as well as "mock"
interviews.
Approximately 500-600 students attended the Career
CJAA Board of Directors Fair. This is one of the most
impressive
events I have witnessed on a college campus.

Directors Update:
I hope this E-NEWS message finds you well and that you had an enjoyable
holiday season. It is a typically balmy early January in East
Lansing.
The cold weather has not slowed down activity at the School. The faculty and our graduate students were very well-represented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Chicago in November. We had a very enjoyable get together of alumni, faculty, and graduate students one evening. We very much enjoyed meeting with alumni attending the conference as well as some of our alums from the Chicago region who joined us for the reception.
Also in November, MSU held a Saturday morning workshop on the new Cyber Security initiative. Professors David Carter and Judith Collins from the School were among a dozen faculty that made presentations on their research. Nearly 100 MSU faculty were in attendance. The high quality presentations included topics ranging from securing health information to biometric security tools. The presentations and discussions clearly demonstrated the expertise across the University related to cyber and homeland security.
School faculty have been extremely productive. Three recently published books include Merry Morash and Pamela Schram (alum) Prison Experience: Special Issues of Women in Prison, Christopher Smith's Criminal Procedure as well as The Supreme Court, Crime, and the Ideal of Equal Justice that Chris authored with Christina DeJong and John Burrow (alum). Faculty have also been very productive publishing journal articles and future updates will provide samples of MSU faculty in the journals.
The School continues to take great pride in the educational experience provided to both undergraduate and graduate students. Consequently, we were thrilled to learn that Kristy Holtfreter, a Ph.D. Candidate, received MSU's Excellence in Teaching Certificate. Kristy was one of only six doctoral candidates so honored.
Best Wishes for a Happy 2003!

School of Criminal Justice
Michigan State University
Summer is finally here and I hope this edition finds you all well
and
enjoying time with your friends and families. There is a lot of
good
news to report in this edition, from visiting with your 1952 alumni at
the Patriarch reunion, planning a speaker Forum with our California
alumni
to looking ahead for the Fall Golf Outing and Wall of Fame
recognition's.
In addition, if you have any information you would like share with
other
alumni please let me know for publication in the next edition.
Candy Curtis
Special Note
Congratulations to Gordon Kettler '64 (CJ) who will be awarded the
MSU Distinguished Alumni Award in the fall. We are all very proud
of Gordon and his dedication and accomplishments to the profession of
security
and the School of Criminal Justice.
Directors Update:
The academic year ended with a series of celebrations of the
achievements
of the School of Criminal Justice students.
In the last edition of the CJ E-News, I included a request to assist Tim Homberg in finding internship placements for several students. Many alumni replied to Tim and assisted in finding new opportunities. Your support in finding placements for our students is greatly appreciated.
Chief and Director of the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety, Bruce Benson, will be joining the faculty in August. Bruce holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (and undergraduate and graduate degrees from SCJ at MSU). He will bring tremendous experience in police leadership and management. Additionally, John McCluskey will be joining the faculty in the fall. John recently received his Ph.D. from the School of Criminal Justice at SUNY- Albany. He is working in Detroit on the Strategic Approaches to Community Safety Initiative as well as in Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids on a juvenile intervention initiative.
In the areas of cyber security and homeland defense, I am pleased to announce that the University has agreed to provide three years of seed funding for a joint School of Criminal Justice/Computer Science and Engineering Cyber Security Program. This is very exciting as it addresses all three elements of our mission -- education, research, and outreach with our professional constituencies.
Meetings with Alumni
In early May I was the guest of Sheriff Rick Jones and Chief Marty
Underhill at the Eaton County Law Enforcement Executives Meeting.
Both are alum's. Along with the regular meetings convened by
Sheriff
Gene Wrigglesworth in Ingham County, this has been an excellent
opportunity
to meet with local law enforcement. I appreciate all three of our
alumni for the invitation to these meetings.
Mid-May provided an opportunity to dine with Chief Bob Ferber (and spouse Carol) and Bill Fertaw (Director, Emergency Services Training Program, Oakland Community College) at one of our alumni dinners.
Later in the month the DC-area, alumni group held an event at George Washington University. Alan Boehm arranged the meeting at GW's University Club and David Westrate twisted the arm of Stephen Casteel from DEA to provide a very informative presentation on "Terrorism and Drug Trafficking Organizations -A Status Report." Our alumni present included: Gary Acker, Alan Boehm, Bill Livingood, Bob Ressler, Charlie Rinkevich, Paul Sparks, David Westrate and Brett Yankie. It was a very enjoyable evening.
Alumni Events:
Patriarch Reunion 2002
The School of Criminal Justice sponsored a Patriarch Reunion luncheon
for our 1952 CJ graduates in conjunction with the University's annual
Patriarch
activities. The luncheon was held on June 8 and our Director Ed

MSUAA Update:
Muskegon County Alumni Association
The MSU Alumni Club of Muskegon County sponsored its 12th Annual Don
Arnson
Golf Outing and Scholarship Dinner. Folks may recall that Don
was a
graduate of Muskegon high school and played Spartan football in the
40's
and helped to found the Muskegon area alumni club in the 1960s.
We lost
Don to cancer just a few short years ago, and the club has named its
annual
event in his honor.
San Francisco Alumni Association
The MSU Alumni Club of San Francisco reports the Big Ten Picnic was
a big hit -- attracting alumni from all over the Bay area.
According
to
club president Jon Wood: Over 50 Spartans and more than 400 Big Ten
alumni showed up for a great day at the Big Ten Picnic on Treasure
Island.
Have a Great summer and GO SPARTANS!

We had a very nice Kedzie Cane reunion dinner with 1953 alums Vic Strecher and Bill Slanger and 1952 alum Fred Vanosdall along with their spouses. As many of you know Vic had a very distinguished career in academia including serving as Dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University. Fred similarly devoted his career to traffic safety research in the state of Michigan and at MSU where he remains involved in research. Bill, following initial work in the private sector, became an educator having taught middle and high school in the Grand Rapids area.
It was a picture perfect day for our annual MACP/Trojanowicz Golf Outing at Brookshire Golf and Country Club in Williamston. I want to thank all who participated in making this event a success and your continued support for student scholarship opportunities. For those who could not attend this year's event I would encourage you to join us next year. Mark your calendar, the date will be September 17, 2004, at the Brookshire Golf and Country Club in Williamston, Michigan.
